Where DeskAlerts is hosted, on our side or your side?
You can obtain full copy of DeskAlerts and host it within your corporate network or any other host.
Can I export users from our Active Directory?
Yes, DeskAlerts fully supports Active Directory, you can export users. DeskAlerts synchronizes with Active Directory continuously. You can export multi-domain or very complicated tree structure.
What are recommended server requirements?
- Windows 2003/2008 Server
- Or Windows XP Professional
- IIS 5.1 or higher (with ASP required)
- MSSQL 2005 or higher
- 2GHz CPU or faster
- 1024 MB RAM
- 200 MB free hard drive space
What are workstation requirements?
- 256 MB RAM
- 10 MB free hard drive space
- Windows XP/Vista/7
- MAC 10.5.8, 10.6.4 or higher
- Linux comming soon!
Is dedicated server required or DeskAlerts can share the server?
DeskAlerts can be installed on server sharing resources with another applications.
What are the steps of deployment?
Scenario 1 (Existing Server or PC + MS SQL Express)
Key benefits: Minimal infrastructure investments (Practically 0)
Max number of users that can be served: 1'000
Deployment scenario: Existing PC need to be configured to run IIS (Internet Information Services) that is provided with the following operating systems:
- Win Server 2003/2008
- Win XP Professional edition
- Win Vista Home Premium / Professional / Ultimate editions
- Win 7 all editions
Please read official IIS website for instructions on configuring IIS (http://learn.iis.net/) and enable ASP support.
The sever need to be set-up to run MS SQL Express. That is freely available for all the above mentioned operating systems. Please read instructions on configuring MS SQL Express here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms143680(v=SQL.90).aspx).
As soon as you have configured the server you just need to install DeskAlerts Server to run there. Please follow DeskAlerts installation manual (http://www.alert-software.com/files/DeskAlerts_Administrators_Manual.pdf).
Scenario 2 (New Server + MS SQL Expess)
Key benefits: Low infrastructure investment, separation from other services
Max number of users served: 3000
Deployment scenario: New Win 2003/2008 server need to be configured to run IIS with ASP support. Please read official IIS website for instructions
on configuring IIS (http://learn.iis.net/) and enabling ASP support.
The sever need to be set-up to run MS SQL Express. That is freely available for all those server operating systems. Please read instructions on configuring MS SQL Express here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms143680(v=SQL.90).aspx).

Note: MS SQL server can be used on remote PC as well
Scenario 3 (New server + MS SQL local or remote)
Key benefits: You can use your existing SQL server licenses, highly scalable and performing configuration, can be extended to clustered configuration
Max number of users server: no limits
Deployment scenario: Win Server 2003/2008 need to be configured to run IIS with ASP support. Local or remote instance of MS SQL need to be configured.
As soon as you have configured the server you just need to install DeskAlerts Server to run there. Please follow DeskAlerts installation manual (http://www.alert-software.com/files/DeskAlerts_Administrators_Manual.pdf).
Note: Please ask for custom deployment scenarios if you are unsure which configuration is better.
Can I send alerts from another application?
Yes, using API another application can send alerts via DeskAlerts, please ask sales.
Can I send alerts to Blackberry or Wireless PDA?
Yes, DeskAlerts can send messages to Blackberry and Wireless PDA using SMS gateway or E-mail add-on.
What is bandwidth consumption?
Each client consumes about 3Kb per hour.
You can adjust this value by setting pinging period.
Can Desktop Client be packaged as an MSI file?
Yes, Desktop Client can be packaged as EXE installation file or MSI file.
What is port number DeskAlerts use to send messages?
DeskAlerts uses 80 HTTP port.
Can I hide uninstall, close icons from DeskAlerts Client menu?
Yes you may configure DeskAlerts Client the way you need:

I've got HTTP 500 error when tried to upload a file.
This issue may be caused by the current IIS settings being too small for the intended file uploads or
downloads. You can change the size limit by editing the IIS metabase.xml file. Please check our Administrator's manual, Troubleshooting section.
Can DeskAlerts be used to send a picture via SMS?
You can send only text via SMS.
Is DeskAlerts able to run on 64-bit, or does it only have 32-bit capabilities?
Yes, DeskAlerts supports both 32 and 64-bit.
Can SQL instance share a server with other databases or does it need to be it’s own separate database?
Yes, you can share it with other databases.
