Why the Desktop Computer Won’t Go Away

Every passing year, it seems more and more people are ditching their desktop computers. Gone are the days when the desktop computer was the only choice for home and office use. In fact, worldwide desktop computer shipments declined by 10 percent in 2015. So have we seen the last of desktop PCs?

Experts agree that desktop computers won’t go away despite the continued decline of PC sales. This means that we will continue to see corporate desktop wallpaper in offices. There are several compelling reasons why desktop computer will not go away:

1. It’s cheap

Desktops are more affordable than laptops. That goes for a new unit, and for repairs. There are several reasons behind this, with the expensive laptop PC components the main explanation.

Now you may think that there are lots of components in a desktop like the keyboard, trackpad, and screen. However a keyboard and mouse can be had for $5 while an average 24-inch monitor won’t cost you more than $50.

2. Larger monitors mean being more productive

Another reason why offices will continue to use desktop PCs in the future is the fact that larger monitors can affect the productivity of workers. Aside from showing larger corporate desktop wallpaper that can display a company’s logo or motivational quotes, a bigger monitor means office workers can be more productive.

You may be hard pressed to find a laptop that has a screen bigger than 17 inches. On the other hand, 20-inch screens are typical of desktop computers. Having a bigger monitor can affect the productivity of workers such as graphic designers.

3. It can be recycled

The desktop can be recycled when it dies. It can be used as a server, or even as a network-attached storage device. You can also sell the parts of the desktop on eBay such as the monitor or the keyboard.

4. It’s secure

Yes, desktops aren’t portable. You can’t bring it home and show to your family the corporate desktop wallpaper that you’ve been raving about. But that’s a good thing, too, particularly when security and durability are concerned.

Because desktops would stay in the same room, they’re basically secure from theft. You won’t be able to bring it home and lose it to a thief. No one will steal your desktop computer at work, because it is too big.

And even when a burglar breaks into your house, it is unlikely that he’ll target the desktop computer what with all its attached peripherals.

And since the desktop computer is stationary, there’s no chance for it to be bumped or dropped in your bag. Simply put, you can be assured that the desktop PC will last for many years unlike a laptop or tablet that can be easily damaged.

5. Repairing a desktop is easy

If a desktop computer suddenly experiences a glitch, you can bring it to a computer repair shop. Replacing a component won’t also cost you a lot, whether it’s a graphics card, monitor, or even processor. On the other hand, you may likely have to replace the laptop itself when a component malfunctions.

6. Creative software is best used on a desktop

While creative software like Adobe Photoshop can be run on laptops, you will have a hard time utilizing these applications when the screen size is small or when you have to deal with the laptop’s trackpad. Creative software requires a powerful graphics card, high-end processor, a big monitor, and lots of peripherals like a keyboard and a mouse, all of which aren’t found in a laptop.

Indeed, the desktop computer will remain a fixture in offices and homes in the next decade or so. You’ll continue seeing that corporate desktop wallpaper at work because it is unlikely that desktop PCs will go away in the near future.
